GATEWAY FIELD HOCKEY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD WINNERS

Jenna Compton (Edwardsville High School - Edwardsville, IL)
Kelly Yates - Gateway Owner / Director
Kate Ruddy (Duchesne High School - Houston, TX)

Kelly and Joe Yates of Gateway Field Hockey continue to "give back" to the sport, initiating a Gateway College Scholarship for two (2) high school seniors.  Players are picked on their dedication to the sport, sportsmanship, and work ethic at camp and with Gateway's select teams

The first players selected are Jenna Compton of Edwardsville, IL,  and Kate Ruddy of Houston, TX.  Each player will receive a $500 scholarship stipend to assist with their initial year of college.  Both players have been members of Gateway's select teams and participated with Gateway at the 2007 National Hockey Festival in Palm Springs.  Their selection was announced at the team's Thanksgiving Dinner Celebration during the 2007 Hockey Festival.

In making the announcement of the two winners - Kelly Yates said, "I don't think we could have picked two more deserving players for this initial award then Jenna and Kate.  Both totally exemplify the criteria we used and both immediately came to my mind when I discussed possible winners with Joe."

GATEWAY COACH HELPS TEAM WIN
TWO SCOTTISH TITLES

Andy Thornton, a familiar face on the Gateway coaching staff for the past 5 years, recently helped his local field hockey team win not one, but two national indoor titles. The first national title Andy helped his squad win was the Scottish National Indoor Championship, the fourth consecutive year the team has earned the championship. In the teams’ final game, Andy notched two goals. The win earned the team a berth in the European Cup in Feb. 2008. His team will compete this year (February) in Lille, France for the A Division European Cup.

The second title was for winning the Scottish Cup. In the teams’ final game
victory Andy put in two more goals, giving him 12 on the year.

Kelly (Yates) said of the Gateway staffer, “we’re really proud and happy for Andy and his teammates. He’s been a valuable part of our Gateway staff for a number of years and does a fantastic job in teaching all our campers. He works so well with all the kids, and never steps on the field without being enthusiastic in helping the campers become better players.”

Andy has been coaching in his native Scotland for several years. He was named Scottish Coach of the Year in 2004 for youth boys and took Grove Academy High School to their first U-18 national field hockey title that same year.

“Jazzy”, as he’s known by teammates and friends, has also served the past three years as the assistant coach at the University of Albany, which moved into the Top 20 ranks this past season. The top player on Albany’s team this past year, Michelle Simpson (from England), and one of the top college players in the East will also return as a part of the Gateway coaching staff. Michelle was a part of the Gateway camp staff in 2005, and most recently coached the Gateway U-19 Southwest team at the National Hockey Festival.

(L-R) – Andy with Just Ossendorp (Holland), another veteran Gateway coach who will return in 2007, and Meg O’Connell having some fun during coaches’ introductions at the 2006 St. Louis camp.
