About Gateway Field Hockey
Gateway field hockey is owned and directed by long time field hockey coach and umpire, Kelly Yates. A St. Louis native, Kelly Yates, is a member of the 1979 National Championship Southwest Missouri State University National Championship team. After college she returned to St. Louis where she coached at a variety of high schools as well as the Head Coach for Saint Louis University for nine seasons. In 1985, Yates saw the need to grow field hockey in the midwest so she decided to start the Gateway Field Hockey Camps. Gateway Camps grew from one camp to over ten camps in various cities in the Midwest and Southwest into the 1990s. In the 1990s Gateway Field Hockey began the Gateway Field Hockey Club by taking three teams (Team Gateway St. Louis, Team Gateway Midwest, and Team Gateway Southwest) to the National Field Hockey Festival. During the 1990s, Kelly was a PE teacher, a field hockey umpire, and in 1997 she started the field hockey team at Lafayette High School. Kelly remained at Lafayette High School where she had a winning season for twelve straight seasons finishing with ten conference championships and five final four appearances. Kelly was lucky enough to coach both her daughters from 2000-2006. Both of Kelly's daughters were also members of the Gateway Club teams. In 2001, Gateway Field Hockey Club expanded to a year round club and attended the first annual Disney Field Hockey Showcase where they placed 2nd overall! Gateway is the first club in the midwest to attend these yearly tournaments and has an incredible history since! In the mid 2000s Gateway Field Hockey wanted to expand its offerings in St. Louis by offering seasonal leagues at the Soccer Park and at various indoor locations during the cold months. For ten years now Gateway has offered recreational and advanced leagues for athletes ages 5-18. These leagues are offered in the winter, spring, summer, and fall and run for seven consecutive weeks. From 2004 to 2010 Yates traveled every fall weekend to watch her two daughter (Kate and Meg) play division 1 field hockey at Indiana University. In 2008, Kate graduated from Indiana University and returned to St. Louis to be a part of Gateway Field Hockey. Kate, took over as head coach for her mom at Lafayette High School in 2009 where she coached for five seasons and won the 2011 Midwest Field Hockey Championship. In 2013, Kate was offered the position as Head Field Hockey coach at Villa Duchesne. In 2017 Kate became the first coach in St. Louis history to win State Championships at two different schools. Kelly and Kate work hand in hand on Gateway Field Hockey! We now offer a wide variety of programs for any type of athlete. The Gateway Club is one of the most prestigious clubs in the country and we have helped over 350 athletes reach their dreams of playing field hockey and college!
